The history of Cambodia began in the first century A.D with the establishment of a State called Funan. Funan is still renowned as being the oldest Indianized State in the whole of Southeast Asia. Modern day Khmer customs and language evolved from this period in time.

Cambodia is located in South-East Asia, has a territory of 181,035 sq km (69,900 sq miles), and bordering with Thailand at the West, Northwest, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic at the North, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the East and Southeast, and also the Gulf of Thailand at the South and Southwest. Moreover, Cambodia is almost lying on vast lowland largely formed alluvial sediment from the MEKONG, TONLE SAP and BASSAC Rivers; it is surrounded on the three sides with forested highland.
It is administratively divided
- Into 4 municipalities and 20 provinces;
- Population 14.8 million (UN estimate 2005) and about 85% out of the whole populations live in rural areas and engage mainly in agriculture;
- Cambodia capital is Phnom Penh with population 1.17 million (2005);
- Government: Constitutional monarchy since 1993;
- Language: Khmer is the official language and spoken by 95% of the population. Chinese and Vietnamese are also spoken. French was widely spoken until the arrival of the Pol Pot regime and is still taugh in schools, but English is now a more popular language to learn among the younger generation;
- Religion: 95% Buddhist (Theravada), the remainder Muslim and Christian. Buddhism was reinstated as the national religion in 1989 after a ban on religious activity in 1975;

- Head of State: King Norodom Sihamoni since 2004;
- Head of Government: Prime Minister Hun Sen since 1998.

The climate over Cambodia is a tropical climate with temperature ranging from 19 to 23 degrees Celsius during the months of November to March. The temperature may rise as high as 38 degrees Celsius during the month of April and May. There are two seasons: rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season is from May to November and the dry season is from the rest of the year, and the annual rainfall averages 1,477mm of which about 90% is concentrated in the rainy season. Read more...
